Loft Boarding Services
Make the most of your home with expert loft boarding
Loft boarding is one of the simplest ways to make better use of the space you already have. Instead of leaving your loft empty or difficult to access, our loft boarding services provide a safe, solid area that can be used properly for storage.
At Life Lofts, we’ve been carrying out loft boarding services for over 13 years, helping homeowners create practical loft space without the need for major building work. Whether you want to board part of your loft for extra storage or improve an existing setup, we’ll make sure the finish is safe, secure and built to last.
BENEFITS
Why choose loft boarding?
Loft boarding is a practical way to free up space elsewhere in the home. It gives you a reliable area for storing things you do not need every day, while making the loft much easier and safer to use. When fitted properly with the right insulation beneath, it can also help improve energy efficiency and support a warmer home overall.
For many homeowners, this is also a sensible step if bigger plans are on the horizon. It makes the loft more accessible now and creates a better base for future improvements later on.
Types of loft boards we use
We offer different loft boarding options depending on the type of storage you need, how often you plan to use the space and the condition of the loft itself. Every installation is planned around what works best for your home.
P5 Chipboard
P5 chipboard is a popular choice because it is moisture resistant, durable and well suited to everyday storage. It offers a strong, cost-effective finish for most domestic lofts.
OSB (Oriented Strand Board)
OSB is made from compressed wood strands and is known for its strength and durability. It is a good option where a more hard-wearing board is needed and works well for lofts that will be used more regularly.
Plywood
Plywood is the strongest of the three options and is sometimes used where extra strength is needed. It is less common for standard domestic lofts because of the higher cost, but it can be the right choice for specific requirements.
If you are unsure which option would suit your loft best, we can talk you through it during your survey.

NOT SURE?
Frequently asked questions
Does boarding your loft cause condensation?
Not when it is installed correctly. Condensation is usually caused by poor ventilation. As part of our installation, we ensure adequate airflow and, where needed, install raised boarding systems to help prevent moisture build-up.
Can I add insulation under the loft boards?
Yes. Insulating beneath loft boarding is one of the most effective ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency and reduce heating costs. We can assess your existing insulation and recommend the best solution during your survey.
What size are the loft boards?
Loft boards come in a few different sizes, depending on the type of board and the space being covered. In most cases, they are either 18 mm or 22 mm thick, with standard board sizes including 1220 mm x 320 mm, 2400 mm x 600 mm and 2400 mm x 1200 mm.
Can I walk on the loft boards?
Yes, provided they are professionally installed and not overloaded. Our loft boarding services ensure that every installation is secure and safe for normal household storage use.
How long does a loft boarding installation take?
Most loft boarding installations can be completed within a day, depending on the size of the loft and whether additional work, such as insulation or improved access, is required. Larger or more complex projects may take slightly longer.
Do I need planning permission to board my loft?
No, loft boarding does not usually require planning permission because it does not involve structural changes to the property. If you are considering a future loft conversion, we can advise on any additional requirements.
Can loft boards be installed over existing insulation?
Yes, but it is important that the insulation is not compressed, as this can reduce its effectiveness. We often install a raised loft boarding system to maintain the correct insulation depth while providing a stable storage platform.
How much weight can loft boarding support?
The weight capacity depends on the existing joists and the type of boards used. Standard loft boarding is suitable for typical household storage such as boxes, suitcases, and seasonal items. During our survey, we assess the structure and advise on safe load limits.
Is loft boarding suitable for all homes?
Most homes are suitable for loft boarding, although the approach may vary depending on the roof structure, access, and insulation levels. A free survey allows us to determine the best loft boarding solution for your property.
Can you install loft ladders or improve loft access at the same time?
